Homemade spiced meatballs and potatoes baked together in a tomato sauce — a hearty, no-fuss Turkish main dish.
The Story
Baked meatballs with potatoes is one of the most practical and beloved Turkish main dishes. Prepared in one tray and sent into the oven, it's a weeknight hero and a dinner party staple alike.
One tray, maximum flavor — that's the beauty of this dish.
Preheat oven to 200°C.
Combine ground meat, onion, egg, bread, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper. Knead well.
Shape into oval patties.
Spread potato slices in an oiled tray; season with salt, chili flakes and olive oil.
Place meatballs over the potatoes. Lay tomato slices on top.
Drizzle with olive oil.
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until meatballs and potatoes are browned.
Hazel's Note
Soaked stale bread keeps the meatballs moist and tender. Slice potatoes evenly so they cook through at the same rate as the meatballs.
